Why Manage Your Small Woodland?
We are very fortunate in the South of England to be surrounded by woodlands of all sizes. Indeed, although woodland cover in the UK is around 13% (one of the lowest in Europe), here in Surrey, woodlands account for around 24% of the land use. Much of this woodland is owned and managed by large estates, government departments or charities such as The National Trust or the Forestry Commission. But many of these woodlands are owned in relatively small blocks by private individuals who care deeply for the land which they have often inherited.
Managing small woodlands has its unique challenges and opportunities. The small scale of the woodlands often means that there is no opportunity for economies of scale to insure the financial viability of management operations. But the small nature of the woodland allows for very specific management, often down to the individual tree. Through the careful management of these small woodlands, it is possible to make a real impact for wildlife, biodiversity and landscape aesthetics if done correctly and sensitively.
We manage a range of woodlands from the very large to very small, but the small woodlands are some of our most cherished and biodiverse. Many of these small patches of woodland are classified as Ancient Woodland, which if properly managed, is the most biodiverse habitat in the British Isles. Through careful planning, mapping and sensitive delivery, we are able to deliver huge biodiversity gains in many customers woodlands alongside of the considerations such as recreational use, firewood production and filming opportunists.
If you own a woodland, we are more than happy to undertake a free initial consultation to discuss your aims and aspirations for the site. We can then work closely with you to produce a forestry commission approved management plan and discuss how best to sensitively deliver you management aims for the site. Whether your passion is for the best Bluebell display in the county, or butterfly filled woodland glades, our team of woodland officers and forestry consultants will work with you to deliver those aims and maximise the opportunities your woodland holds.
